Opening a Case in a New Tab in Preview Mode (Constellation)

I would like to know if there is a way to open a case in a new browser tab with Preview mode in Constellation?

Currently, there is an “Open in New Tab” option available , which makes it convenient to work with multiple cases simultaneously. However, I do not see a similar option when accessing a case in Preview mode. Instead case always opens in the preview panel with in same browser window.

Could you please confirm whether this functionality is available in Preview mode? If so, could you provide the steps to access it? If not, are there any recommended workarounds or plans to support this feature in the future?

The intent of Preview Mode is to provide a quick, in-context review experience, allowing users to inspect case details without leaving their current worklist, search results, or parent case. The preview panel helps reduce context switching and supports rapid navigation across multiple cases. Opening a preview in a new browser tab would effectively resemble a full case view rather than a lightweight preview experience. For users who need to work on multiple cases simultaneously, the Open in New Tab option is the recommended approach, while Preview Mode remains focused on fast case review within the same window.

Thank you for your clarification regarding Preview Mode. I have a follow-up question about a different use case.

Suppose a table or grid displays a list of cases. When a user clicks on a case, instead of opening it in Preview Mode, I would like to provide an option to open the case in a new browser tab in a read-only/view-only experience. The intention is to allow users to review the selected case details without entering the standard casework experience or being able to perform any actions.

Additionally, I would like to control which information is displayed in this read-only experience through configuration.

While configuring additional details for the list/grid, I noticed the “Link to Object” option that allows a field to be displayed as a hyperlink. However, I do not see an option to specify or associate a custom view that should be opened when the user clicks the link.

Could you please clarify whether it is possible in Constellation to open a case in a new browser tab using a read-only/view-only experience, rather than the standard casework or perform experience? If so, what configuration approach would be recommended?

As of now, I don’t think there is an option to open a case in new tab specifically in read-only mode. This is only possible through security configurations using AROs. But, if we do such configuration, the case will be always read-only for that access group irrespective of the place from which it is opened.

Coming to the additional details in grid, I think the option is available from v25 where we can associate a view to Show Additional Details. But, it opens in a modal dialogue rather than new tab.

I can think of one work around. Configure a new data type. Create a case reference property in it referring to the required work class. Customize the data pages of the data type to get info from the work class. Make the list data page to fetch case list. And make the look up data page, take the input of case id and populate the case data into the case reference property. Now, in the full page view of the data type, we can configure all the properties from the case reference. Configure your table to source from the data page of this data type. When user clicks on this table sourced from the date type, it will open in new tab the full page view of the data type with case data, which will give you the read-only experience.

Thanks for the workaround suggestion. While it may address the requirement in some scenarios, my concern is more about the lack of an out-of-the-box capability for what appears to be a common use case.

In UI Kit, users had the ability to open multiple cases in separate tabs and switch between them as needed. This was particularly useful when users needed to review or compare multiple cases.

With Constellation, the recommended experience appears to be centered around the preview panel for viewing case details. While this provides a streamlined, in-context experience, it also limits users to viewing one case at a time and does not offer the same flexibility to review multiple cases concurrently in separate tabs. This seems to be a common requirement across customers.

The proposed workaround using a separate data type and custom data pages could technically work. However, I want to better understand whether it introduces additional design complexity and ongoing maintenance overhead for what appears to be a common business scenario.

Is there a native Constellation pattern that addresses this use case that I may have overlooked, or is the proposed workaround the recommended approach today?

If this capability is not currently available, could it be considered for a future product enhancement?

@SRIDHAR.N going back to your original question “can i open in new tab from Preview”?

Yes. The heading of the preview is a clickable link, you can either click to open the full case/data object page OR right click it to open in tab.

I recorded the first so you can see it in action

@SRIDHAR.N I’d like to move this to User Experience, to go with the other Constellation posts.

However, you are not a member, if you can join then that will allow me to move this (only members can reply to User Experience posts, so you would no longer be able to reply).

Let me know when you join and i’ll move this.

Hi, I have joined in User Experience group. Please move it
