Externalization of Services when upgrade to Infinity 24.1 and beyond

Dear experts,

Our client applications are on Pega 8.5, and we are looking to upgrade to the latest version Infinity 24.x. We understand that 3P services are to be externalized for Infinity 24.2 and beyond. Considering the client applications are currently on 8.5, can you please help address some queries?

  1. Does version 8.5 support externalization of 3rd party services if there are Pega applications using embedded services?
  2. What is the approximate expected release timeline for Infinity ’24.2? What will be the latest release available in 2025?
  3. Can the Pega applications in v8.5 be upgraded to Infinity 24.1 first, followed by externalization of services?
  4. Is it feasible to upgrade to Pega infinity '24.2 and doing externalization of 3rd party services at the same time? If yes, then what are the risks?

The client application currently uses On-prem Pega 8.5.3 (no containerization) and Oracle.

Looking for an early response please.

  1. Pega Infinity Patch Calendar

  2. The externalization of the third-party products must be done before updating to Infinity '24, but that externalization can be done at any point from 8.6 onward. Once you have externalized the third-party products (Hazelcast, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Kafka), you can update directly to Infinity '24 from several prior 8.x versions (8.6, 8.7, 8.8).
