Why Non Materialized IH Summaries don't retrieve data

Hi Pega CDH Community,

I always wonder why a non-materialized IH Summary dataset will not provide the results upon browse. Please provide your answer or experience with this.

The reason for this question is as I heard and studied somewhere about the non-materialized datasets does the aggregation on the fly and retrieve the data.

Thanks in advance,

Syam Kumar M.

Non-materialized IH Summary datasets calculate aggregates at runtime by reading Interaction History from the relational database. In newer Pega CDH versions, Interaction History is commonly stored in the file repository instead of the relational database, so the non-materialized summary may return no data when browsed. (Pega Support Center) Configure the IH Summary as materialized so Pega maintains the aggregated values. When materialization is enabled, Pega can replay or backfill the Interaction History records from the repository and rebuild the aggregates. Wait until the aggregation/backfill process completes, and then browse the IH Summary dataset again to see the results. (Pega Support Center)

Thank you Sairohith for the detailed explanation. This is really helpful.

PS. I have realized the answer after posting the question and thought of keeping it for the reference of others.
