Licensing question: Using Kafka Data Sets (produce/consume case events) on Pega Platform 8.6 On-Prem

Hello Pega Support Team,

I’m reaching out with a licensing question regarding the use of Kafka integration on Pega Platform.

Environment

  • Product: Pega Platform

  • Version: 8.6

  • Deployment: On-Premises

Planned use case
We want to produce and consume events related to Cases using Kafka Data Sets, following the documentation:

Pega will integrate with an existing external Kafka cluster in our company to exchange events related to our customer service journey (case lifecycle / customer interaction events).

Current status
We have already configured the Kafka connection and successfully executed functional tests in our DEV environment, following the documentation above.

Question (Production / licensing impact)
When enabling and using Kafka Data Sets in Production for this use case (publishing and consuming case-related events to/from an external Kafka cluster), does this imply:

  1. any additional license purchase (e.g., an add-on product/edition), or

  2. any change in licensing terms/metrics (e.g., consumption-based metrics, invocation counts, etc.) compared to our current Pega Platform 8.6 on-prem license?

If there are specific Pega license SKUs/editions or conditions that apply to Kafka Data Sets usage in production, could you please point us to the relevant official guidance and/or confirm what applies to our scenario?

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,
Gabriel

Kafka Data Sets are a built-in Pega Platform Data Set type used to publish to and consume from Kafka topics, so turning this on in Production is just using a standard integration feature of the platform. Pega’s licensing objects and “license compliance” facilities are meant to log and report usage for compliance, and they do not restrict or change how the system runs. So, using Kafka Data Sets to exchange case lifecycle events with your external Kafka cluster should not, by itself, require an extra Pega add-on purchase or introduce a new consumption or invocation-based metric beyond whatever your existing Pega Platform agreement already measures

Hello @Sairohith ,

Thank you for the clarification.

To ensure we document this properly for internal compliance/audit purposes, could you please confirm that your guidance applies to our exact scenario on Pega Platform 8.6 On-Prem, where we will only use Kafka Data Sets to publish and consume case lifecycle events with our existing external Kafka cluster (with no additional Pega products/editions involved)?

Also, if possible, could you share an official Pega documentation reference (or Knowledge Base article) that supports this guidance?

Assuming that is correct, we will proceed with the Kafka Data Sets configuration.

Best regards,
Gabriel

@GabrielC17656001 Hi Gabriel, yes, this guidance applies to your exact Pega Platform 8.6 on prem scenario where you only publish and consume case lifecycle events via Kafka Data Sets to your existing external Kafka cluster
