Hello,

Currently all Gen AI capabilities provided are only for Constellation based UI (except Knowledge Buddy and Blue Print). Is there any plan to add these capabilities to Cosmos UI? Most of the applications in the wild are on Cosmos UI and will take some more time to be on Constellation UI. If you want fast adoption of Constellation UI, then there should be a OOTB converter. I understand making Gen AI capabilities available to UIKit doesn’t make sense. When a new feature is introduced, it should have some backward compatibility?

As of Infinity 24, Only Pega GenAI Coach is not available in traditional UI (Theme Cosmos).

Thanks for the details. I have used Connect GenAI for building DIY GenAI capabilities. But my ask is why there is no backward compatability? Any reason why it has to be on Constellation?

If GenAI can be connected via a connect rule, why not ship it with the product to support Theme Cosmos?

Why Connect GenAI Requires Constellation

Connect GenAI was designed specifically to leverage the unique capabilities and architecture that Constellation provides. Constellation features a center-out approach that focuses on business outcomes and customer journeys, allowing for a more seamless integration of AI functionalities. This modern architecture supports the latest open-source technologies and UI solutions needed for GenAI to function optimally.

The Constellation architecture provides several technical advantages that make it better suited for GenAI integration:

  1. It employs a modular design that adapts to various screen sizes, ensuring high-quality user experiences across devices
  2. It features built-in accessibility compliance with front-end best practices
  3. It offers a more configurable UI framework that can better accommodate the dynamic nature of AI-generated content

Why There Is No Backward Compatibility

The lack of backward compatibility stems from fundamental architectural differences between Constellation and Theme Cosmos. Theme Cosmos follows a traditional UI approach with its own set of components, templates, and interaction patterns that weren’t designed with GenAI capabilities in mind.

Making Connect GenAI backward compatible would require:

  • Significant re-engineering of how GenAI interfaces with the UI layer
  • Creating duplicate functionality across two different architecture paradigms
  • Maintaining compatibility between systems with fundamentally different design principles

These challenges would likely introduce performance issues, user experience inconsistencies, and ongoing maintenance complexities.

Why GenAI Can’t Be Shipped with Theme Cosmos

While Connect GenAI can be connected via a connect rule, shipping it with Theme Cosmos presents several technical challenges:

  1. The underlying technologies that power GenAI rely on Constellation’s architecture for optimal performance
  2. Theme Cosmos lacks certain UI components and interaction patterns needed for effective GenAI integration
  3. Bundling GenAI with Theme Cosmos would require maintaining two separate codebases for the same functionality, which would increase complexity and potential for bugs

Additionally, Pega’s development roadmap appears to be prioritizing Constellation as the future UI framework, with new features like GenAI being built to take advantage of its modern architecture.

Our applications are in Theme Cosmos and some of them are still moving to Theme Cosmos. So, it would be better if we have these GenAI capabilities available for the applications as well.
